Landscape Design and Landscaping by Martin Palma

An English country garden is much more than just a decorative feature it reflects a particular way of life. It embodies a harmonious relationship with nature, embraces traditions, and exudes elegance. These gardens are an intersection of aesthetic beauty and practicality, with a noticeable connection to both the past and present. At Ecolandscape Studio, we frequently work on such projects and fully understand the importance of considering every detail when creating such unique spaces.

Designing an English country garden is a delicate process, and today, I will share with you three of the most popular design styles, as well as provide insights into our experience and the solutions we’ve implemented in real-world projects.

Classic English Cottage Garden: Brightness and Vitality

The classic English cottage garden is the perfect combination of nature and culture. In this garden, there is always harmony between ornamental plants and useful crops. The use of bright flowers such as roses, irises, and lavender, as well as natural materials like stone and brick, creates an atmosphere where it is easy to relax and rejuvenate.

In one of our recent projects, we created a garden for a family who wanted to recreate the atmosphere of a traditional English garden in their yard. We used not only traditional plants but also added elements that support biodiversity, such as plants that attract beneficial insects. This not only made the garden beautiful but also ecologically sustainable, which plays a significant role in modern gardening.

Modern English Country Garden: Minimalism and Functionality

In recent years, more and more people are turning to a modern approach to garden design, choosing a style that is simple yet functional. Such a garden may include simple yet elegant shapes, minimal plants, and an emphasis on convenience.

We have frequently encountered requests to create such gardens, and each time we propose a solution that combines minimalism with comfort. For example, in one of our projects for a small country house, we used simple geometric shapes to create walkways and a relaxation area. Applying such solutions allows for a cozy space where every detail has its purpose.

Traditional English Garden for a Manor: Grandeur and Symmetry

For old country houses or large estates, the traditional English garden is ideal, created with an emphasis on symmetry and grandeur. Such a garden often requires complex solutions to highlight the architecture of the house and create an atmosphere of peace and comfort. Topiary elements, strict lines, statues, and classical plants all help to create a space that will complement the grandeur of a historical home.

When we worked on a project for a historical estate, the main request was to create a garden that would match the status of the house. We used antique elements such as tall topiary shrubs and massive stone paths, emphasizing the grandeur and nobility of the estate. Special attention was given to landscape accents like tree-lined avenues and skillfully placed statues, adding a special charm and historical significance to the space.

How to Choose the Style for Your English Garden

The process of designing an English country garden is an art that requires attention to every detail. It is important to remember that the garden should be an extension of the house, not just a decorative element. When choosing a style, one should consider not only aesthetic preferences but also the functional features of the plot.

As Martin Palma, the founder of Ecolandscape Studio, pointed out: «Designing an English garden is always about finding the balance between tradition and modernity. We strive to create a space that will be comfortable and pleasant to use, while still preserving its aesthetic value and historical significance.»

When choosing a style for your garden, it is important to base your decision on your preferences, the features of the plot, and of course, to consider the practicality and sustainability of the solutions. We always follow these principles when creating gardens for our clients, ensuring that each project is unique and tailored to its owners.

If you are planning to create an English garden, we recommend you:

  • Use plants that are not only beautiful but also beneficial for the garden’s ecosystem.
  • Pay attention to the proper placement of elements so they match the overall style of your home.
  • Consult experienced designers who can help you choose the optimal style that meets your desires and the requirements of your plot.

At Ecolandscape Studio, we are always ready to offer you ideas that will help you create the garden of your dreams. Every decision we make is guided not only by aesthetics but also by functionality, making each project truly unique.
