Landscape Design and Landscaping by Martin Palma

Landscaping can sometimes be a real challenge, especially when a site requires not just aesthetic improvements but also changes that will make the space more functional. We faced such a situation when working with a family in the suburbs. Their backyard wasn’t just small it was confined by concrete walls and neighboring structures, which made it feel even more closed-off and dreary. However, through a comprehensive approach, we transformed this space into a stylish and cozy nook where the family could spend time together.

When we at Ecolandscape Studio started working with the clients, their main problem was the lack of space. The backyard was enclosed, without greenery, and not suited for comfortable relaxation. The family wanted to create a space where they could peacefully unwind, have evening dinners outdoors, and let the children play. However, the existing walls and the limited space seemed like insurmountable obstacles.

Problems of Limited Space

When working with a restricted space, especially if it’s isolated on both sides by neighboring buildings or tall fences, the main difficulty is creating a sense of freedom and spaciousness. In this case, the absence of plants, greenery, and basic areas for comfort was quite evident. The backyard was surrounded by high walls, which immediately created a sense of tightness and overshadowed the whole space. For a family that planned to spend a lot of time here, it was crucial to eliminate this feeling of confinement. This was especially important since the family had small children who needed enough space to play.

Strategy: Using Vertical Space

Instead of simply replacing everything old with new, we decided to first think about how to make the most of the existing space. To add greenery and hide the fences, we chose vertical elements such as trellises, climbing plants, and green wall panels. This not only helped to visually expand the space but also added elements that enriched the backyard’s design, making it more natural and vibrant.

The clients also wanted to include areas for outdoor relaxation, like a dining zone and a sitting area, but the space was too cramped to accommodate standard furniture. We suggested using compact solutions, like folding tables and chairs that could be easily stored when not in use, saving space.

Creating Private Zones for Seclusion

One of the major challenges was creating a private zone. With neighbors on both sides and tall fences, this became an even more pressing issue. We decided to install several decorative screens and dense hedges of perennial plants, which not only provided privacy but also created green barriers. These elements simultaneously offered a sense of protection and harmony with nature without overcrowding the space.

Minimizing Maintenance and Ensuring Convenience

As with other clients, it was essential to consider not just the visual aspects but also the convenience of maintenance. Since the family couldn’t devote much time to garden care, we selected plants that required minimal attention and adapted well to the local climate. Perennials, grasses, and flowering shrubs were chosen with an eye toward low maintenance.

Additionally, in the relaxation zone, we used natural stone pathways that not only blended well with the surrounding landscape but were also durable and required little upkeep.

Ecolandscape Studio’s Recommendations for a Small Backyard

  • Use Vertical Solutions
In a limited space, it’s crucial to make use of vertical elements such as climbing plants, trellises, and pergolas. This will provide the necessary greenery and conceal elements that limit the space, like fences.
  • Mobile Furniture
In small backyards, movable furniture is ideal. Compact tables and chairs that fold easily will save space and allow the space to adapt to different needs.
  • Hedges for Privacy
To create a secluded area, use tall decorative panels, hedges, and dense shrubs. These will not only protect you from curious eyes but will also visually expand the space.
  • Minimal Maintenance
Choose plants that require minimal maintenance to ensure the backyard remains beautiful without needing constant upkeep. Design a plan where the plants blend harmoniously with the overall landscape and suit your climate.

Transforming a small and limited backyard into a cozy and functional space requires not only a creative approach but also attention to detail. We always strive to use every inch of space wisely, adding low-maintenance plants and creating areas that adapt to the family’s needs.

As Martin Palma, the founder and CEO of Ecolandscape Studio, says: «Every site, regardless of its size or limitations, can become a cozy and functional space if approached with intelligence and an understanding of its features.»
