Landscape Design and Landscaping by Martin Palma

Hanging plants have become a true hallmark of modern interiors. At Ecolandscape Studio, we often emphasize that well-chosen greenery brings a space to life, improves the indoor climate, and helps purify the air. Ampelous (trailing) plants are not just decoration they are a way to create vertical compositions that visually enlarge a room and give it a natural sense of lightness.

Burro’s Tail — a Decorative Succulent for Hanging Baskets

Burro’s Tail (Sedum morganianum) is one of the most striking trailing succulents. Its long, drooping stems with fleshy leaves create the illusion of a green waterfall. At Ecolandscape Studio, we recommend placing it in bright, indirect light and watering moderately, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. The plant’s leaves are fragile, so it’s best to hang it where it won’t be brushed against.

Our founder and CEO, Martin Palma, notes: “Anyone who sees Burro’s Tail in a hanging basket feels the magic of nature in the interior it’s simple yet incredibly inspiring.”

Heartleaf Vines: Philodendron and String of Hearts

Heartleaf Philodendron is a plant with heart-shaped leaves, often recommended for hanging baskets. It is low-maintenance, tolerates both low and bright indirect light, and requires watering only after the top layer of soil dries. Philodendron not only beautifies interiors but also helps purify the air from harmful substances.

Ceropegia woodii is a romantic trailing vine with heart-shaped leaves and delicate pink hues underneath. It easily adapts to moderate lighting and doesn’t require frequent watering, making it perfect for bedrooms or living rooms.

Fast-Growing and Low-Maintenance Plants

For those who prefer easy care, Devil’s Ivy (Epipremnum aureum) and Scindapsus (Scindapsus pictus) are ideal. Devil’s Ivy grows easily even in low light, and its long variegated stems can be guided along walls or trellises. Scindapsus features dark green leaves with silvery spots, creating a sense of depth and texture. At Ecolandscape Studio, we recommend moderate watering and indirect light to maintain their decorative appeal.

Decorative and Unique Varieties

String of Pearls (Senecio rowleyanus) is an unusual succulent with trailing stems resembling a pearl necklace. In bright, indirect light and with moderate watering, it retains its shape and decorative charm.

Tradescantia zebrina is a fast-growing trailing plant with dark purple leaves and a silvery sheen. We recommend it for small rooms and hanging baskets to quickly create a lush green volume.

Hoya carnosa has waxy leaves and fragrant star-shaped flowers. For active flowering, it requires bright, indirect light and moderate watering, with air humidity maintained around 50–60%.

Tillandsia is an air plant that doesn’t require soil, making it perfect for hanging arrangements. Its silvery leaves create a sense of weightlessness and lightness, and regular misting or soaking prevents drying.

Hanging plants require attention to light, humidity, and watering. We recommend combining plants with different textures, shapes, and leaf colors to create harmonious and natural compositions. Even a few trailing plants can transform an interior, creating a green oasis at home.

At Ecolandscape Studio, we share our personal experience and recommendations so that your hanging plants delight the eye and enhance your home’s coziness for years. Proper placement, moderate care, and attention to detail will help you create the perfect interior with living greenery.
